How we calculate Upwork rates
When a job shows a minimum and maximum hourly rate, we take the midpoint. Across all priced jobs in a category (or skill) over the last 30 days, we report the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentiles. The p50 (median) is the middle of the market; the p25–p75 band shows where the middle half of postings sit. Fixed-price jobs are summarized by their posted budget.
These are posted asks, not settled earnings. What a freelancer ultimately earns depends on negotiation, scope, revisions, and profile strength. Treat the numbers as a market reference point.
How to set your Upwork rate
- Start from your category's p50 (median).
- Move toward p75 if you are experienced, the skill is scarce, or crowding is low.
- Move toward p25 if you are newer or the slice is crowded.
- Cross-check against skill-level bands in the in-app rate calculator.
Upwork rates, answered

It varies by category. We show the median (p50) posted hourly rate per category, with the p25–p75 band around it. Open the table above for the current numbers.
What do p25, p50, and p75 mean?

Is the posted rate what freelancers actually earn?
No. These are posted asks from job bands, not settled earnings. Final pay depends on negotiation, scope, and profile.
How should I set my Upwork hourly rate?
Start from the category median, then move up for scarcity/experience or down for crowding. The in-app calculator gives skill-level bands.
